First Edition Spring 2003

Tony Defends the Title

With three months off, the 2002 Winston Cup champion returns to prove he can do it again. At the beginning of February, Tony Stewart is ready, ready to prove that it wasn't a fluke that he had won the title last year. One of the first things he had to do is make it to the finish of the

Daytona 500, something that he hasn't accomplished in the last two years. He made it through this year by placing in the top 10. But some are sort of wondering if its a jinx to have actually finished this year. Since in the past, Tony hasn't

in the big wrecks at Talledega and Texas. Other problems came up to, including engine and brake problems.

It's funny how his teammate, Bobby Labonte though is having a great season. He has been finishing in the top five at many races and even won at Atlanta, which is where Tony won his first race last year. But who knows, things could change for the better. Tony finished fourth at Dover behind his teammate and fellow

Hoosier Ryan Newman.

completed the race his season usually goes really well.

The races following Daytona were pretty good, considering that Tony had finished them with out DNF (did not finish).

But later on, he got caught up

if not more. The power steering on his Dodge broke with about 180 laps to go, meaning he had to exert more energy during the second half of the race than other drivers; Newman climbed out of

the car with a sore back, neck and arms. Plus, Newman couldn't really swerve behind the pace car to clean debris off of his tires, making life difficult during restarts.

Many expected Newman, last year's top rookie, to contend for the championship this season. But outside of a victory at Texas, Newman's 2003 has been marked by highlight-reel crashes at Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway. Before his fifth-place finish at Lowe's Motor Speedway last Sunday, Newman had four consecutive finishes of 38th or worse.

Sure, second-place finisher Jeff Gordon and third-place finisher Bobby Labonte both said Tony Stewart likely would have won the race if Stewart hadn't been penalized for inching over the boundary of his team's stall on pit road during a midrace pit stop. Stewart lost a lap but hustled back to finish fourth.

But Newman said the circumstances behind his victory were just as taxing as Stewart's,

"It's just too hypothetical to say," Newman said. "If we had power steering the whole race, I might

My First Meeting w/ Tony!!

By: Cami Nickelson

This was it, the day I would me my main man! Everyone tells me I am crazy, but how could you not resist this handsome man! He is great in so many ways, but best of all he is a race car driver. Anyways, like you all don't know already how great he is. I met Tony at the Home Depot in Beaverton, Oregon. I got there three hours before he was to be there! It was a lot of fun waiting though, sharing stories and showing off memorabilia. I had never been around that many fans of Tony and it was great! Nobody was dissing him and it was just great fun! When he finally arrived, I was shaking! When I got up there to have him sign my book, I was so nervous and I asked him for his hand! If only I could have gotten a hug! Since there wasn't that many people waiting for autographs I got back in line again and again. It was great! Now if only I could do that everyday! Tony is the best!
